Designing Women Boutique’s 2011 Grants Presented in Spring, 2012
Designing Women Boutique & Estate Services, Sarasota’s premier non- profit consignment boutique, sets the standard for consigned, donated and new designer fashion, home furnishing accents, accessories and antiques. In addition, the ever-growing Estates & Downsizing Sales division, under the directorship of founder and CEO Jean Weidner, provides compassionate, full concierge service for handling all of one’s treasured estate belongings. Designing Women Boutique welcomes inquires about this division from attorneys, estate planners and their clients. This not- for-profit’s mission is to grow funding for the programs, projects and endowments of Sarasota’s arts and human services organizations. Now celebrating its 10-year anniversary of giving back to the Sarasota community, Designing Women Boutique & Estate Services has bestowed over $1,500,000 in grants and re-donations to more than 50 recipients.
For the 2011 Grant Awards, presented in Spring, 2012, Carol Phillips, President of Designing Women Boutique’s Board of Trustees, and DWB’s Grant Committee, chaired by Board Trustee Joan Wood, have awarded funds to support projects of 12 local non-profit arts and humanities organizations. Five of the recipients received grants named in memory of the late Ethel Taub. Ethel was a local philanthropist who bequeathed numerous treasures for the benefit of the community to Designing Women and the chosen grantees reflect her interests, namely the development and enrichment of Sarasota’s children.
BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF SARASOTA COUNTY – to help fund their 2012 Summer Program, which will enable children to attend who otherwise would not be able to participate. Representing the Boys & Girls Club to receive the grant was Bill Sadlo, President/CEO.
CIRCUS SARASOTA – An Ethel Taub Estate Memorial Grant – to support Circus Sarasota & Phoenix Academy program for at-risk children in 8th to 10th grades. Receiving the grant were Circus Sarasota’s Dolly Jacobs, Co-Founder and Associate Director, Scott Hinckley, Chief Development Officer, and Jennifer Gemmeke, Development & Grants Manager.
COMMUNITY AFFORDABLE & SUPPORTED LIVING, INC. – to support this organization that helps improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities by providing appropriate and affordable housing in 40 locations, this grant will enable much-needed remodeling of a kitchen in one of these properties. The grant was received by J. Scott Eller, CEO, and Charles E. Richards, founder and retired Chair.
FLORIDA STUDIO THEATRE – to support the New Gompertz Theatre Campaign which consists of renovating the existing Gompertz Theatre and constructing two new theaters. The grant was received by James Lemons, General Manager.
HABITUDE – A non-profit organization that provides children with life coaching and academic tutoring of school children at risk by providing the skills, courage and respect in order for them to make appropriate life choices. The grant will be used to purchase school supplies, books, I- Pads/educational apps for students in the program. The grant was accepted by Founder & President, Martin Hurwitz.
JEWISH FAMILY & CHILDREN’S SERVICES OF SARASOTA–MANATEE, INC. - An Ethel Taub Estate Memorial Grant – to fund high-risk middle school students to attend a 10-day McIntosh Art/Music/Design Summer Camp program that includes art, etiquette, money management modules. Patti Thompson, director of the “Challenge to Change” program at McIntosh Middle School, accepted the grant.
RINGLING COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN – An Ethel Taub Estate Memorial Grant – to provide financial assistance to a student in need who has excelled in his or her studies. Accepting this g
rant was Chris Osborne, Development Officer at Ringling College of Art + Design.
SARASOTA BALLET OF FLORIDA – to help fund next season’s special performance of the Paul Taylor ballet “Company B”. The grant was accepted by Noreen Delaney, Development Director, Michael Scott, Business Manager, and Hillary Steele, Chair of the Sarasota Ballet Board of Directors.
SARASOTA MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT - An Ethel Taub Estate Memorial Grant - to purchase a special ‘Pediacraft’ neonatal crib for critically ill newborns and premature babies in the community. Mary Saionz, Director of Major Gifts, and Debby Harman, Clinical Manager of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit received the grant.
SARASOTA ORCHESTRA – to support Young Person’s Concerts, the largest of Sarasota Orchestra’s educational outreach efforts, serving nearly 10,000 fourth and fifth grade students in public, private and home schools. The grant was accepted by Kay Semrod, Grants Coordinator.
SARASOTA YOUTH OPERA – An Ethel Taub Estate Memorial Grant - to support a Family Access Pass Program allowing 50 families to attend the world premiere of “Little Nemo in Slumberland” which the Sarasota Opera commissioned, and which will be presented this Fall in partnership with Booker High School, Sailor Circus and Out-of-Door Academy. Susan Danis, Executive Director, and Karen Dove, Grants Officer, accepted the grant.
ASOLO REPERTORY THEATRE – Designing Women Boutique awarded a grant to Asolo Rep to support their ongoing productions. Accepting the grant from Asolo Repertory Theatre were Michael Donald Edwards, Producing Artistic Director, Susan Buck, Board President, Warren Coville and Managing Director, Linda DiGabriele.
